Facing Two Foes: Chronic Illness and Anxiety

As Sarah sat in the doctor’s office, the diagnosis of lupus felt like a heavy weight settling on her shoulders. This new diagnosis of Lupus, a chronic illness, on top of her daughter's diagnosis of juvenile diabetes (another chronic illness), felt overwhelming. Sarah's new reality not only brought physical challenges but also an unexpected wave of anxiety that seemed to accompany every step of her daily life. Like Sarah, many individuals living with chronic illnesses grapple with secondary anxiety, a natural but often overwhelming response to ongoing health issues.


Chronic illness often disrupts life in profound ways. Beyond the physical symptoms, there is a constant need to manage treatments, appointments, and lifestyle adjustments. This perpetual state of vigilance can breed anxiety, a response to the uncertainty and unpredictability that chronic illnesses impose.
